Job Title: JSAS Specialist – Islamic Ideologies and Terrorism Issues
Reporting To: Senior Director, JSAS
Position Summary:
The Specialist – Islamic Ideologies and Terrorism Issues will play three key roles. First and foremost, the position will utilise expertise on Islamic ideologies and terrorism issues to help JSAS deliver on existing and future terrorism / Islamic extremist-related project work. The position will work closely with project managers and analysts to plan and execute research and analysis for contracted work. Second, the position will seek to establish and develop thought leadership on Islamic extremism and terrorism issues through publications and speaking at conferences. Third, the position will utilise expertise and thought leadership to develop business related to the position’s required subject-matter expertise.
General Duties & Responsibilities:
The primary duty and responsibility of this position is to work directly with managers and analysts to perform and deliver research and analysis for on-going and future projects focusing on Islamic ideologies, radicalisation and recruitment and the existing and emerging terrorist threat, both at a tactical and strategic level. The position will offer established subject-matter expertise to enhance the quality of JSAS analysis and deliverables and will interact frequently with government and corporate clients, including responding to specific substantive client enquiries and marketing and business development efforts.
The position will also be required to work with JSAS management to develop and actively demonstrate thought leadership on the topics referenced above through publishing articles, delivering conference presentations and, potentially, responding to media requests.
In this capacity, the individual will provide support to a wide range of business development opportunities that fit within the remit of this position.
Daily activities will include primary and secondary source research, vetting data while providing value-added analysis and subject matter expertise, building and augmenting client briefings, authoring client reports and marketing white papers, as well as thought leadership pieces and other tasks identified by managers.
Skills / Knowledge / Experience
Key Tasks and Goals include but are not limited to:- Provide deep subject-matter expertise to assist in delivery on key projects with an Islamic ideologies and terrorism focus (classified client, USG)
- Engage in ‘thought leadership’ activities to help raise the profile of JSAS expertise on these subjects and assist in developing Islamic extremism / Terrorism-related business
- Support business development activities of Jane’s consultancy
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise on Islamic extremism and other Islamic ideologies, including key strands of Islamic thought, different Islamic groups, organisations and leaders, both radical and more moderate, etc
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise on the global terrorist threat, especially the persistent threat to global security and the security of specific states posed by networks of radical, militant Islamic terrorist organisations.
- Knowledge of extremist radicalisation and recruitment processes, including, but not limited to, the nature and shape of the online Islamic extremist community
- Ability and desire to establish and demonstrate thought leadership on key topics associated with Islamic ideologies and terrorism
- Exceptional verbal and written communications skills
- Experience delivering presentations and briefs to large audiences
- Proven ability to multi-task on a number of engagements at one time
- Ability to work, and flourish, in a team environment
- Fluency in Arabic and/or Urdu
- Experience working with national intelligence and defence communities on counter-terrorism related issues
- A robust network of contacts and sources throughout the world
- Ability to attain a UK Security Clearance

Educational Requirements
B.A./B.S. required, Masters/MBA preferred, 5+ years of experience studying Islamic ideologies, Islamic extremism and terrorism / counter-terrorism related issues
