Ballistic Missile Defence
To their proponents, US ballistic missile defence programmes are a vital component in the nation’s defence. To their opponents, these programmes are an expensive boondoggle – projects that consume vast amounts of money while offering little or no useful defensive capability. To Russia and China, they are inherently destabilising, and threaten to upset the nuclear status-quo.
During this online seminar, Jane’s will present a report on the US programmes and assess claims made by opponents of ballistic missile defence that these systems have limited capability and could easily be countered by suitable countermeasures such as decoys.

Hosted by Jane’s Missiles and Rockets, this 60 minute presentation will -
- Examine the status of the main US programmes – Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD), Aegis BMD, and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD),
- Consider alternative approaches such as Airborne Laser (ABL), the Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) and Multiple Kill Vehicle (MKV) that have been sidelined or even cancelled by the new US government,
- Describe the emerging threats that these programmes are intended to cope with, and
- Report on the feasibility of enemy counter-measures.
The presentation will include a question and answer session during which you will be able to explore and discuss the topic with Jane’s analysts in greater detail.
