IHS Jane’s Editor Robert Hewson Wins Best Breaking News Submission Award

2009 Aerospace Journalist of the Year Awards hosted by the World Leadership Forum

Robert Hewson Aerospace Journalist of the Year

LONDON (25th June 2009) – Jane’s Air-Launched Weapons Editor Robert Hewson won the Aerospace Journalist of the Year Award for the Best Breaking News Story of 2009. The award was sponsored by the Royal Aeronautical Society. The trophy was presented for Hewson’s article Questions Raised Over Norway’s JSF Cost Calculations, which appeared in Jane’s Defence Weekly. Hewson has been a military journalist and analyst for nearly 20 years, specialising in aerospace and systems technology.

"The selection of the F-35 over the Gripen in the Norwegian fighter contest last winter was a highly controversial decision, with ramifications way beyond Norway itself,” said Jane’s Defence Weekly Editor Peter Felstead. “What Rob achieved with that story was to nail down, in detail and in advance of everyone else, a lot of the apparent disconnects that were evident in the outcome of that competition. It was exactly the kind of exclusive, breaking news to which Jane's Defence Weekly aspires."

The winning article addressed the controversial issue of Norway’s claim that the Lockheed Martin’s F-35 JSF will be cheaper than Saab’s Gripen NG. Hewson stated that Norway’s claim appeared to be at odds with U.S. cost calculations. He also mentioned Sweden’s guarantee of a total operational price for 48 fully equipped Gripen NG’s.

Extract from the winning article, Questions raised over Norway’s JSF cost calculations

The Swedish offer to Norway guaranteed a 'total operational' price of NOK 24 billion for 48 fully equipped Gripen NGs with active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, infrared search and track system, datalinks and electronic warfare (EW) systems. That price also included all pilot and technician training, simulators, mission planning and support systems, spares and logistics - "everything except weapons and fuel", according to one source in Norway. The price was in current-year Kroner and delivery dates were fixed. There is no information on how the rival JSF price was structured.

After winning the award, Hewson explained, “ Two items of my work for IHS Jane’s were shortlisted for an Aerospace Journalist of the Year Award this year and I am particularly pleased to have won in the Breaking News category against such stiff competition.”
